NY, NY

If there is a correlation between the amount of meat hanging over a deli’s counter and the deliciousness of their sandwiches, then Mike’s Deli on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx is a clear winner.

This place is amazing.  Arthur Avenue is like Little Italy minus all of the tourist stuff.  Here it’s all authentic, and the sandwiches at Mike’s are something worth driving for.   Bring a cooler and buy some sharp locatelli, tasty italian suasage, fresh made ravioli, and baked-to-perfection bread and you’ve got almost all of the ingredients for your next meal back at home.  Add some of Mom’s homemade sauce and you’ve got a meal that has been more than 30,000 kilometers in the making.

Summer is NOT Over

Another near 80 degree sunny day has arrived here in NY which means one thing–another day at the beach.  That also means a stop at All American on the way home.  It’s going to be a good day.

Over the weekend we went to work at what was our most profitable venture in the last 10 months before our reshingling project.  Things didn’t turn out quite as well as they did in Riverton, New Zealand but luckily we can go back and try again.  We were so close on a few races that I just know we’ll win big next time.

Great Lakes, Great Times

We’re back!  This has easily been the longest hiatus for A Bad Day Camping, and all I can say is that I think I’m fearing the end of our adventures.  I figure that if I stop writing then I can postpone the end of our trip.  It’s been about a month since we left the abundance of knickknacks, 5 cent coffee, and dangerously obese people at Wall Drug, and we’ve made our way back to New Hampshire and the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean.  In between all that we spent a few weeks in Michigan where summer was in full swing.

We screeched into Michigan with brake pads nearly gone, headlights barely functioning, and stomachs craving egg sandwiches and broccoli casserole.  The Smith family house was exactly what we needed and Jeff and Jackie kindly welcomed us and all of our dirty laundry with open arms.  By the time we left Michigan our brake pads were replaced, headlights rewired, clothes cleaned, and tummies full of delicious food–thanks Jackie and Jeff!

Of course, it wasn’t all work.  We spent plenty of time “Up North” at Higgins Lake cruising around on the boat, tubing, kneeboarding, and water skiing (which I discovered is the cheapest way to get a high powered enema).  We also managed to squeeze in a few days at Sleeping Bear Dune National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan.

With the end of our trip looming overhead, we also started to think about the inevitable–finding work.  So, in the midst of all the fun and games we managed to apply for a job of sorts.  In the spirit of adventure and up-for-anything attitude that has led us halfway around the world, we tried out for a TV show–The Amazing Race.  Our cousin Alex told us that we would be awesome for this show, and then by a stroke of luck there happened to be an open casting call in Michigan just days later.  It didn’t matter that we had never heard of the show or watched it.  We figured we’d trust our family’s advice and just go for it.  Stay tuned for an update on the job search!

Family Time

If the past 5 months weren’t enough, these past few weeks have been a great reminder of how lucky we are.  For a few days we were living the high life in San Fran at a sweet hotel (all that shopping paid off Ellen–thanks!), complete with leopard print robes.  We had a blast checking out the sights in San Fran, but it was little Timmy, of course, that got most of our attention.  It’s amazing what happens over the course of 7 months in the life of a 13 month old.  We covered a lot of ground in just a few days, but also had time to relax and catch up on the past few months.

Ken, Ellen and Timmy continued on to LA to visit friends while we headed out to Yosemite with my folks for a few days.  Wow, what a place.  Even though it was Fourth of July weekend and Yosemite Valley was a zoo, it’s still an incredible landscape.  There’s just something special about exposed granite domes that you can’t find in other areas.  And, we didn’t have to go far to avoid the crowds.  We stayed in a cabin near the Hetch Hetchy and went on a beautiful hike while seeing only a handful of people.  There were a number of fires burning in the park which made the air a bit hazy and picture taking a bit difficult.  And, it probably made it a bit harder for Joanie and I to keep up with my parents.  Whew, we put some miles under our feet!  I thought I had stopped growing years ago (at least vertically), but check out these family shots.

It’s been so fun meeting up with friends and family that we’re feeling an urge to get to Michigan, New York and New Hampshire to see everyone else.  But, we’ve got about 3 or 4 weeks of time to explore Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota and wherever else we decide to go.

We’re Back!

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Back to the USA and back to the blog for a quick update.  We’ve been having so much fun meeting up with friends and family since we arrived in California two weeks ago that there hasn’t been much time for anything else.  We’ve done far too much to capture in one post, but here’s the quick recap.

After 5 months in New Zealand and 30+ hours of traveling, could there be anything more American than going to the San Diego Fair, eating fried oreos, twinkies, apples and avocados,  seeing a Johnny Cash cover band, and trying to win cheap stuffed animals?  Probably not.  We met up with our friends Ryan and Karin in San Diego and had a great couple of days that also included a Swedish Midsummer’s party and a snorkeling adventure in search of sharks (only saw one).

We then zipped up the coast to San Francisco to meet up with the Hipple family and the start of a two week feeding frenzy.  The past week has been a blur of good times, burritos, hills, donuts, surrey rides, burritos, laughter, trips to the playground with the kids and good music.  After a few days in San Fran with Ethan as our tour guide we all drove north to the Kate Wolf Music Festival where spent a few days listening to good music and surviving the 100+ degree heat.

Now we’re back in San Fran in the midst of Albers Fest with Mom, Dad, Ken, Ellen and little Timmy.  I’ll get into all that we’ve done and how awesome it is to have the cutest nephew in the world later.  As hard as it was to leave New Zealand and the dream life we were living there, coming back to our family and friends was just what we needed.  We had been looking forward to these few weeks for a while, and the time that we’ll have with Joanie’s family when we get to Michigan.  There’s still more to come with a quick trip out to Yosemite and then we’re back on the road heading east again.

More pictures will be coming soon…once I find that camera cord.

The Mitten State

11 days in Michigan flew by and we’ll be on the road again in the morning.  Although we missed out on Mystery Mansion, we found enough time to cross country ski in over 2 feet of snow, relax in the hot tub, visit with Joanie’s parents and over 40 family members for Christmas, and catch up with our 19 month old niece Keating.  Since we last visited, Keating started walking and talking up a storm.  Jason and Stacy have their hands full trying to keep up with her.  We’re looking forward to visiting MI again in the summer for a trip to Cedar Point and Higgins Lake.

Real Virginia

Our next stop was in Alexandria, VA for a visit with Ken, Ellen and Little Tim.  It’s always great to head into D.C. and check out the museums and this time we finally made it over to the Capitol.  A huge thanks to our friend Chris who took us on a behind the scenes tour of the Capitol and the Russell Senate Office Building.  The little subway car that took us from the Russell SOB to the Capitol was pretty sweet, and they’ve done a nice job on the new visitor’s center.

The newly renovated National Museum of American History was a highlight.  Things are well done and very up to date–in the American Presidency exhibit they’ve even got Barack Obama up there as the 44th President of the United States of America.  January 20th can’t come soon enough!

We had a lot of quality time watching Little Tim, more great food, and even time for a few games of Risk.  It was tough to leave the comforts of VA, but there was a trail calling our name in Kentucky…

A New York Minute

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Our first stop was in Massapequa Park, NY for Thanksgiving and the unloading of the cars.  Pete and Jes aren’t the only ones with a whole bunch of our stuff in their basement!  Thanks Mom and Dad, and Pete and Jes!  New York was great–lots of sunny days, games of Set, visiting friends (Erik and Ellery!) and FOOD.  Tim started working on his “winter coat”, forgetting that this will be a short winter before heading to New Zealand.  Aside from the Thanksgiving feast, we also scored the All American Hat Trick.  That means three trips to All American in one week for the best burgers and fries you can get anywhere.

We hit some other NY standards as well with the Albers’ (Ken, Ellen, Little Tim, Mom and Dad) and Erik and Ellery–Jones Beach, Central Park, Grand Central Station, FAO Schwarz and, of course, McSorley’s.  We didn’t take any pictures in NY, but this one from Ken of Little Tim sums it all up.
